A worked example

Illustration using the 2026-09-06 data review: $50,000 for 12 months, 24% federal tax, 5% state tax in California, no local tax or NIIT, and monthly reinvestment for funds. Gold costs $60 over the year. The example HYSA is 3.5% APY and keeps $1,242.50 after tax. Fund exemptions use 2025 information as a proxy.

These are dated examples at constant rates, not current recommendations. Ranges are mathematical limits, not likely outcomes. Change the inputs below for your situation.

Include the subscription cost

The dated table above shows the APY from Robinhood’s official high-yield cash page. The model subtracts $5 per month for Gold unless you already pay for it for other reasons. It does not model a promotional bonus or an annual billing discount.

The fee depends on your balance

A $60 annual fee costs 0.60% of a $10,000 starting balance, or 0.12% of $50,000. That fee is subtracted after the modeled taxes. It is not assumed to reduce taxable interest. Change your balance and savings APY to find the difference for your scenario.

Understand where the cash sits

Under the program description reviewed for this release, the first $10,000 is held in the brokerage account and is not FDIC insured. Eligible cash above that amount is swept to program banks, where FDIC coverage is subject to applicable limits and conditions. Do not read the program’s maximum advertised insurance amount as coverage for every dollar in every account.

Cash and mutual funds are different products

Robinhood’s transfer guidance lists mutual funds as unsupported, so this comparison does not show Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab money market funds as purchasable there. Review eligibility and current program terms before relying on a quoted cash APY.

The calculator ranks only products with a complete tax estimate under your inputs. It does not choose investments for you or guarantee future income. Read the methodology and source documents.

Rates are held constant and income is reinvested. Taxes are paid from outside the account. Tax exemptions use 2025 issuer information as a proxy; 2026 percentages are not yet final. Unknown municipal tax splits appear as ranges and are not ranked. Local exemptions, AMT, deductions and tax-bracket interactions are outside the model. See how we calculate →
